Scott Morrison has announced an additional 10,000 new home care packages, as part of the Commonwealth Government’s $537 million aged care funding package.
Every additional place is welcome, but 10,000 packages is a mere drop in the ocean when there are 120,000 people waiting for the correct level of home care; alongside 16,000 deaths on the waitlist in 2018.
Catholic Health Australia CEO Pat Garcia has called for additional funds for the remaining 110,000 Australians waiting for a home care package.
While half a billion dollars is a significant amount of money, it’s been estimated we need $5.5 billion alone just to address the full home care package waiting list and the remuneration gap for the underpaid aged care workforce.
Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe has called a system that provides greater confidence for Australians wishing to stay at home longer and avoid residential care.
Current waitlists for all levels of home care packages extend beyond six months. It’s doubtful the addition of 10,000 packages will make any significant change to waiting times; so we recommend anyone interested in obtaining a home care package apply and get the ball rolling as soon as possible.
